I believe that setting a table doesn’t need to be complicated, but it is all about the details. I typically start with one piece (for this table it was the lemon salad plates), then build from there. I’m a bit of a dish hoarder, so I typically have what I need to “layer” my place settings.

I often get asked where I shop, and my answer is, “everywhere.”  If I like it, I think I have a use for it, and the price is right, I typically buy it. 

In this case, the yellow placemats and the white chargers were from Pier 1. I’ve had the yellow dinner plates for so long, I don’t remember where I got them. The salad plates I picked up from a little gift store/boutique in Stowe, VT when we were traveling a few years ago. The owner, Cristina, has become a sweet Instagram friend. I hope you’ll check out her online shop, The Country Store on Main. I’ve even ordered a few of my face masks from her. They’re adorable and ship fast!!   The yellow checked table runner, the wooden board, and the white pitcher are all Home Goods finds. The white flatware is from Antique Farmhouse. and the candle from Antique Candle Co.   I picked up the lemon branches from Target Dollar Spot.   You can find the cute the cute interchangeable sign from a favorite Etsy vendor of mine, Erica Dixon.  Lastly, the Lime Green Goblets are an Amazon find. 

We moved into this house eight years ago, and one of the first things I was going to do was change this chandelier. That still hasn’t happened. 

It’s all about the details.

 I couldn’t share the story, without sharing just one more thing. The groom-to-be’s last name……….Gump! Yes, our Jenny, is going to be Jenny Gump!! Of course, we can’t help but have a little fun with the name!

And, of course, “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.”

How awesome is this “make your own bouquet bar?” Thank you Erin, from Wind Acre Farm for all of the beautiful flowers and the fun “make your own bouquet.” I know the guests enjoyed it!!

Gigi has a beautiful yard, perfect for outdoor entertaining!! I mean, who wouldn’t want to sit poolside, enjoying wonderful food, drinking bubbly, visiting with great family and friends, surrounded by over-the-top party decor, all while wearing a BIG HAT!! It seriously crossed my mind, that all we needed was the groom and a pastor, and we could skip the big wedding and marry them right then and there!!

As you can tell, Jenny was surrounded by so many women who love her!! Special thanks to her future mother-in-law, not only for her awesome son, but for driving up to the shower, and driving all the gifts back home for Jenny!

Gigi, thank you again for everything!! You went above and beyond! I look forward to someday (soon-ish) getting to shower your girls!!

I absolutely love the details of hosting a party! Everything from the food & drink, table settings, invitations, and decor. Every detail is so much fun to plan! I like my guests to feel welcome from the first minute they arrive at our house, which means that my front porch always needs a slight theming and a bit of decor!And seriously, how amazing is this chalkboard? I wish I could take credit for the artwork, but guess who did it?? The Bride-to-Be! Yep, she’s my chalkboard artist! Check out some of the other fantastic boards that she’s done for me in the past. Here’s a post I did that you might enjoy, 7 Simple Party Planning Tips, that not only is full of great party planning tips, but it also shows a few more of Alyssa’s chalkboards.

The chalkboard itself was purchased at Pottery Barn years ago as a frame. When we moved into our current home three years ago, I knew that I had the perfect spot for it. I ordered a school grade chalkboard and attached it to the back of the frame. It now hangs above a long buffet that I always use for beverage service when I host parties.

Directly across from the buffet and chalkboard is my kitchen dining area. Although this Aloha Themed Wedding Shower was a backyard party, I decided, because of the heat to set the desserts up indoors. I ordered the cupcakes from a local cupcake shop, and boy were they ever delicious! The cookies, shaped as pineapples, palm trees, hearts, and hibiscus flowers were made by yours truly And my niece, I couldn’t do my cookies without the help of Addy! Not pictured were fruit tarts and also tropical fruit popsicles in a glass of bubbly champagne.

A set of french doors leads you right outside to our back deck. It’s here where I set up drinks and food. Again, once outside our guests were welcomed with a Lei and a Mai-Tai.Here’s a few detail shots of the food table along with the table set up down on the lower lawn. It’s hard to tell by the pictures, but I opted to keep the table center pieces simple. They were simply a candle set in sand and some shells. The food table is where I had fun, using fresh tropical fruits and plants, along with shells, candles, and of course some fun E A T letters and Mr. Coconut Monkey Man. I’m kicking myself now, but I don’t have any pictures of the food I served. What kind of food blogger am I? Seriously, not one picture. Let me tell you about it though, because it turned out pretty darn amazing if I may say so myself.

For appetizers, I served Coconut shrimp (thank you Sheri), and Grilled Sausage & Pineapple Kabobs, and of course set out a couple bags of Hawaiian Chips (Sweet Maui Onion and Luau BBQ).

The main course was Grilled Teriyaki Chicken, Pulled Pork Sliders w/Mango Coleslaw, Blackened Salmon w/Mango Avocado Salsa,  Pineapple Rice, Caesar Salad, Macaroni Salad (thank you Grammy & Jeri), and Tropical Fruit Salad.

And then of course, we served dessert!

All 75 of our guests left with full tummies! Talking about guests, what an honor it was to have Grammy & Papa at our Aloha Themed Wedding Shower!! I’ve known this wonderful couple since I was a little girl and I love them to pieces! We always say that if you look up “class and style” in the dictionary, you’d see their picture. When I grow up I hope to be as full of grace as my sweet dear friend Norma!

And what fun is a party without a photo booth? I dare say this crazy engaged couple had fun with it! I wish now that I had all the phone pics that their friends were taking throughout the party! Need I say, it was a hit!I even managed to get in a pic with Alyssa & Orbie!

Follow these 7 Simple Party Planning Tips to ensure all your guests feel welcome and have a great time, all while hosting stress-free!

1. Plan your menu days in advance. One to two days before the party, do your grocery shopping. If the party I’m hosting is large, I will often break up my shopping into two trips. I buy all non-perishables days in advance, then the day before the party I do my last grocery store run. That list includes perishables and any last minute items that I may have forgotten. And, the best tip of all: if the party is large and you’re doing a Costco run (especially for beverages), go when you can bring your husband along to help with the loading and unloading.

2. Clean the house! A few days in advance, clean the house. Make sure that every room is guest ready! The day of (or the day before depending on how many are in your household), do last minute tidying up, trash emptying, etc. Don’t forget to replace toilet paper with full rolls (nothing worse than guests having to look for an extra roll). Put out clean towels in the guest bath.

3. Dishware, glassware, and silverware. If you’re anything like me, you prefer to use real dishes, glasses, and silverware. I think it adds a special touch to parties! I always pull out all dishes, etc, the day before. If you’re using paper products, go ahead and unwrap them the day before. It will save a few minutes on the day of the event.

4. Much of the food prep can be done the day before. I always do as much as I can the day before, such as: if you’re serving a fruit salad or platter, prep the fruit and store in zip-lock baggies. Think through your menu, and do anything and everything that you can in advance. Here’s a few other things I’ve done: marinate the meat, prep fruits and veggies, make salad dressing, make the garlic bread (do not bake).

5. Ice cubes! Unless my party is a large outdoor event, I often serve some of the drinks (think iced tea and lemonade) in my large drink dispensers. There’s nothing worse than filling up the dispensers, adding in some ice to keep it cold, only to have the ice melt and water down the drink. Make some ice cubes! I’m always making tea or lemonade cubes to add to my dispensers. You can fancy them up with some added fruit, or freeze just the juice. I have lots of plastic ice cube trays, including a few that make jumbo cubes. Another thing I’ve done is slice up a bunch of lemons/limes and freeze those in baggies. They look so pretty floating in lemonade and also help to keep the beverage cold. Make your cubes the day before.

6. Be a good hostess. These might sound so obvious, but I can’t tell you how often people tell me that “I think of everything.” Where are your guests going to put coats/purses? Do you have a spot designated for gifts? Do you guests feel welcome the moment they arrive? I always greet my guests at the door and take coats/purses. I let them know where to place their gift (assuming it’s a shower or birthday party), and let them know to help themselves to a beverage. I want my guests to feel at home and comfortable! Is your front porch inviting? A few freshly potted plants or a welcome chalkboard are always inviting.

7. Consider the layout. I’m fortunate, that my home is fairly large, and a great layout for entertaining. I typically have multiple drink stations set up: one for coffee/tea, another for non-alcoholic, and a third if I’m serving beer/wine/mimosas.  The main food (brunch, lunch, dinner) is set out on the dining room table. The dessert is set on a smaller table or hutch top. I don’t have seating options for the size of parties I typically host, so we “sit around” in the living and family room, then gather into the family room for gift opening. If you don’t have all the spaces, think creatively. How can you set up and keep a “flow?” Can your guests move around comfortably and does your “flow” encourage mingling and getting to know one another?

and lastly…… sorry, I couldn’t stop at 7.

8. Details, details, details! This is where hosting a party is FUN! Is there a theme to your party? It doesn’t need to be elaborate, a color scheme can even qualify as a theme. You’ll see by my images, that I love the details.

Here’s a few detail shots from three different showers. They all happened to be baby showers.

The “Red Wagon” themed party was for my daughter. She was expecting her third child, but her first boy! He needed celebrating and what’s more perfect than little boys and wagons? This shower was a fairly large family & friends afternoon BBQ party. We had a jump house for all the little ones and sent them home with party bags. I carried the wagon theme, along with lots of red & turquoise throughout both the indoors and outdoors.

Next up, was a luncheon baby shower for one of my best friend’s daughter who was expecting twin boys!! So much fun! These sweet baby boys were just born this week! I used their “Jungle” nursery theme as the shower theme. 

And, just this past weekend, I hosted a baby shower for one of my daughter’s best friends. She’s expecting a baby girl! Again, I used the nursery theme of “Bee’s and Wildflowers” for this brunch shower. 

Well, I can go on and on, and as I’m typing this, I’m thinking of a few more tips, that I must share:

Lots of white dishes. I have cupboards and garage shelves full of dishes, and the majority of them are white. Well, I should say that the serving pieces are mostly white. Well, and my entertaining plates. White dishes match everything! Any color theme that you’re going with matches white! I typically pull color into the table set ups with linens and flowers and use all white serving dishes and plates. You will notice on the “wagon” themed party that I used paper products and lots of turquoise & red. This particular party was outdoor eating with lots of little ones, so paper plates made sense. As for the all the red & turquoise, well, I just couldn’t help myself and I happen to have a lot of both those colors. Typically, however, you’ll see lots of white.

And, lastly (again), and maybe most important……except help when it’s offered to you! Even if you aren’t officially co-hosting the party, if someone asks if they can bring something, or if there’s anything they can do, let them. Absolutely!

Photography was a blast, but a lot of work. It was also very time consuming and I quickly realized that “being at this point” in my life, I didn’t want to be tied down to a set schedule. I wanted and needed the flexibility to travel with my husband and visiting our grand babies was always calling my name. I emptied my studio and stored all my props.

Back to the beginning of Joy in Every Season. After a month of posting, I took a little time off to enjoy the holidays (not a big deal as no one was reading my blog yet). As I welcomed in 2015 I realized I really enjoyed blogging. I’ve always loved cooking and entertaining and taking the photos kept my camera dusted off. As 2015 comes to an end, I feel incredibly blessed. I went from no one even knowing that I had a blog, to hearing, “I love your blog” or “I made your {insert recipe name here}” or “thanks for inspiring me.”  Somewhere in about mid July, something clicked. Instead of just plodding along with very few pages views per month, I began to see real growth. I’m humbled (and honestly a little giddy) to say that December tops my monthly page views with over 40k page views this month. Compared to the “big boy” bloggers, that is small, but for little ole me, it’s huge. Thank you to each and every one who has ever stopped by my blog!!

It’s bittersweet for sure, but time to continue on with Joy in Every Season. And maybe the occasion photo session

Last year, our little princesses and ghouls dined on eyeball pasta, green slime, mummy dogs, and monster juice. Everything was simple to make, fun, and they kids filled their tummies before they headed out (in the rain) to Trick-or-Treat. Win-win!!

And, yes, we do pass out cotton candy!!

My husband and I aren’t big on dressing up, so we usually throw on some Giant’s gear. We had two of our grand babies here last year, Tom Brady and Princess Sofia. Joining them last year were a few cousins, Tinkerbelle, Elsa, and Mike from Monsters Inc.

Gotta run now, lots of prepping to get done. A little princess butterfly and Peyton Manning will knocking on my door in a few short hours!!

I got this recipe from a friend back when my girls were in elementary school (20+ years ago), and I’ve been making them ever since. They’re still a favorite and one of my most requested BBQ sides. And the best thing about these is that they are so easy to make for a large crowd (I’ve made them for 100+ on multiple occasions), and, you can make them the day before (bake the day of serving).

Back in the day, I made these every 4th of July. We used to host a large 4th of July party (swim/bbq/fireworks), but now that the family is grown and it’s just my hubby and I this year, there will be no beans. Now don’t be getting too sad for me, I made them last week when we had company for dinner

Whether or not we host a 4th of July party, I need to decorate! After Christmas, 4th of July is my favorite holiday. I love BBQ’ing with friends, being out in the sunshine, and all things red/white/blue!  I just can’t help myself, I have to decorate.  This year I kept it fairly simple, but ……. a few of my favorite red/white/blue and stars/stripes items make an appearance!

Here’s a peek into my 4th of July decor….

And finally, my Baked Bean recipe…..

Lots of ground beef, beans, fresh chopped onions, ketchup (or is it catsup?), brown sugar, and crispy bacon are gently mixed together.

Topped with more bacon and brown sugar. Cover with foil and bake them for a really long time!!!!

Trust me on this, line the bottom of a large baking sheet with multiple layers of foil. Place your baking dish on top. Then bake. Do you see the mess under the pan? That sugary sticky mess would have been burnt on the bottom of the oven if I skipped this step.

Grab a big serving spoon and get ready to dig in!!

The Best Baked Beans/4th of July Decor

Author Joy in Every Season

Ingredients

• 4 28 oz cans Campbell's Pork & Beans drained
• 1 3/4-2 # 80-20 ground beef browned
• 1 # bacon cooked crispy and chopped. Reserve 4 slices (chopped) for topping.
• 1 lg yellow onion finely chopped
• 1 cup dark brown sugar reserve 1/4 cup for topping
• 1 20 oz bottle ketchup

Instructions

• Brown the ground beef in large frying pan (season with salt and pepper), drain fat if needed.
• In a separate frying pan, cook the bacon till crispy.
• Chop or crumble bacon, reserving 4 crumbled slices for the topping.
• Drain the beans.
• Finely chop the yellow onion.
• Add beans to cooked ground beef. Gently stir in ketchup, chopped onion, chopped bacon, and brown sugar.
• Put mixture into large oven proof casserole.
• Top with reserved brown sugar and chopped bacon.
• Cover with foil.
• Place casserole dish onto foil lined rimmed baking sheet (you do not want this to over flow onto the bottom of your oven).
• Bake at 350• for 45 minutes, then reduce heat to 200* and cook for another 2 hours.

In the last couple of weeks:

• I’ve been on Nana duty for a week, getting to spend lots of time with two of my grand babies. Just me and a 5 & 3 year old. Yep, I can still get littles to school on time, help with homework, bath, and bedtime.
• My husband and I did a quick overnight to visit with our youngest daughter. My daughter and I spent a fun day together getting pedis and doing a little shopping (while my husband worked), then we met up with her boyfriend for a great dinner with his parents. Yeah, we finally met his parents!! We think he’s a keeper!
• We flew home on a Friday morning and that evening our oldest and her family arrived to spend a long weekend in SC.
• On Sat, we picked up our middle daughter and her two girls (ages 2 & 4) from the airport. They live the furthest away, so all chores cease when they’re home and it’s play time!
• Sunday was spent decorating and cooking. We hosted a baby shower/family bbq (for 50+) for our middle daughter who’s expecting baby boy mid July.
• Cooking. Cleaning. Playing.
• Cooking. Cleaning. Playing.
• Wash, Rinse, Repeat!!

That’s my life! It’s crazy, it’s busy, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!!!

Sadly, I was so involved enjoying the party, that after the detail pictures, I set my camera down and never picked it back up. I’m kicking myself now, but in the moment I loved my time spent enjoying our family and guests. Not only did I not get any people pictures, but I took no pictures of the food. And it was good!!

My straws and cupcake liners are always from Sweets & Treats! Always.  I ordered my cake from Robin’s Cake Creations. Adorable invite, signs, stickers, etc, from Beckie @ PartySoPerfect.

Is this the most amazing chalkboard art you’ve ever seen? Talented doesn’t even begin to describe my friend Alyssa. I’ve known her since she was in kindergarten with my youngest daughter. Today she is the owner of Seven Directions Art Studio. All I told her was that the shower theme was “little red wagon” and not to make it too cutesy. Within minutes she was free handing this adorable and perfect chalkboard for me. Thank you, thank you, thank you, from the bottom of my heart. I love you Alyssa (and can’t wait to host a shower for you someday)!

Let’s talk a little about what I didn’t show you. The food.

I kept the appetizers simple: grilled sausages w/sweet & spicy mustard, hummus w/fresh veggies & pita chips, and a homemade bean dip (similar to Cowboy Caviar) served w/tortilla chips. Beverages included: homemade sweet tea, lemonade, waters (reg & bubbly), soda, beer, and wine. And because we had 20+ kids (7 & under), I also had applesauce pouches and some box lemonade drinks.

The food menu:

• BBQ’d tri tip served w/guacamole & salsa
• BBQ’d chicken thighs (seasoned with my BBQ Spice Blend)
• Homemade Mac & Cheese (not this exact recipe, but close and just as delicious)
• Broccoli Salad
• Fruit Salad
• Mango Baby Greens Salad  (I’ve been serving this salad for years and still have people asking for the recipe. It’s seriously that good!)
• Panzanella Salad
• Garlic Bread 

Dessert: since I was doing all the main food and knew I was going to be out of town prior to the party, I kept it easy and ordered my cake from Robin. Simple and delicious!

Even with being gone prior to this party, if you’re organized it can still be quite simple!

Grocery Shopping: I did all my big shopping at the beginning of the week (hello Costco). I was able to get all the drinks, chicken, and marinated tri-tips in advance. I did the final grocery store shopping on Friday morning (before all my family started arriving home). Flowers were purchased while out shopping on Friday morning.

Decorating: I did some of it before I left town, including setting up the candy table. I had all the paper products opened and stacked on my dining hutch. I even had my drink dispensers out and just waiting to be filled. I knew the little ones wanted to help decorate so I saved filling party bags, hanging banner, pom-pons, etc. for Saturday (the day before the party).

Food: I prepped a bit on Friday and Saturday, including, making candied pecans (for the mango salad), washing & cutting broccoli, making salad dressing, and making garlic bread. When I use my large drink dispensers, I always make up ice cubes so that the ice does not dilute the beverage. I made up a couple batches of tea cubes for the iced tea. For the lemonade, I sliced a few lemons and froze them and also made a couple batches of lemonade cubes. The drinks remained icy cold and non-diluted all day! Saturdays prep was fairly simple. My son in law did all the BBQ’ing, and my oldest daughter and I finished all the salads and made the mac & cheese.  Easy breasy!

And, I could not, would not, be able to do any of my hosting of events or parties without the help of my husband. Seriously, he is the hardest worker I know and so patient of me as I direct him to “move this” or “make another run to the store.” And he doesn’t stop until everything is put away and the kitchen floor is swept! He’s a good one!

The first obvious choice is to enjoy it for dinner. If I had done that, I probably would have served it with a side of mashed potatoes and some roasted veggies. But, I didn’t do that. In fact, we might have had take out that night. Instead, I roasted up a lot of chicken and cubed/shredded it up. Some is in the fridge and will be used this week and some is in the freezer. I’ll probably use that for enchiladas.

I roasted both a couple of double boneless breasts and also a whole chicken (don’t judge, I know the whole chicken is upside down). I did them pretty much the same way, loaded with lemon, onion, fresh thyme, fresh rosemary, salt, and pepper.

For the breasts, I cut a few lemons and put them in the pan first (drizzled with olive oil), then placed the chicken on top. The pulled back the skin on the chicken breasts and shoved some herbs under the skin. I drizzled olive oil on top and added salt and pepper. They roasted at 350* for approx 45 minutes. Time will depend on size of chicken breasts.

For the whole chicken, I filled the cavity with a whole head of fresh garlic (not peeled), lots of sliced lemon, a half of red onion (quartered), and a few sprigs of thyme & rosemary. Drizzle the top with olive oil and sprinkle on some salt & pepper. My chicken was only about 3 1/2 lbs. I roasted it at 350* for about 45 minutes, then increased the oven to 450* for another 15 minutes. Again cooking time will vary depending on size of chicken. Juices should run clear when cut into.

And since I was in a roasting mood, I also roasted up some whole garlic. To roast, I cut the top of the head off (don’t peel the garlic), drizzle on a little olive oil, and salt & pepper. Wrap in foil and roast. 350* for 45 minutes. When finished, cool slightly, then just squeeze the gooey garlic goodness out of the skin. Use or freeze for later.

Roasted garlic is nothing like raw garlic. It is soft, creamy, sweet, and only slightly garlicky! It’s great served on crackers with a little brie. I ended up by adding some to a Cauliflower/Potato Mash that I did and then froze the rest.
